A Guide to Switching Your Dog's Food

How to transition dog food?

We know that switching your dog's food can be a bit daunting, but we're here to guide you through it with wagging tails and happy bellies in mind. Whether you have a stash of old kibble or need to switch things up pronto, we've got two simple solutions for you.

Gradual Dog Food Transition Method:

If currently have a stockpile of your pup's old dinner, here's the scoop. To begin, choose the new food you want to switch your dog to, ensuring it provides wholesome nutrition and complete, balanced meals. Need help choosing a new food? Ask one of our friendly and knowledgeable store associates, we're happy to help.

Start by serving a blend of 75% old dog food and 25% new food for two days. Then, shift to a 50/50 mix, followed by 25% of the old dog food and 75% of the new food for two more days until you reach a full 100% of the new dog food. If you dog is tolerating the new food without any tummy troubles you can slowly up the percentages daily. You should be able to complete the transition in about a week.

Fasting Method:

In case your dog's old food is unavailable, maybe due to a manufacturer recall or out-of-stock supply, this fasting method can streamline the food transition. Allow your dog to have a 24-hour fast – that means no food or treats for a full 24hrs but still make sure they have access to plenty of clean water. Then the next day, start them on the new food.

Bonus Tip: Pumpkin Power

Help ensure a smooth transition with pumpkin puree. Depending on your dog's size, add in 1-2 teaspoons for small pups, 1-2 tablespoons for medium-sized dogs, and a generous 2-4 tablespoons for the big dogs to their new food. Pumpkin can help combat digestive upset – a frequent side-effect from switching dog food.

Symptoms of changing dog food quickly:

During the transition period when switching a dog's food, it's not uncommon for your furry friend to exhibit mild digestive symptoms. Some dogs may experience temporary loose stools, occasional vomiting, or gas as their sensitive stomachs adjust to the new diet. These symptoms are often a natural part of the adaptation process and are generally mild and short-lived. Monitor your dog's well-being closely during this time, ensuring that the transition is gradual if possible and incorporating remedies like adding pumpkin to their diet to ease digestive discomfort.

Be sure to consult with your veterinarian for personalized advice and if your dog is experiencing issues with the transition.

Whether you opt for the gradual or quick transition method, ensuring your dog's well-being during the food switch is of upmost importance. By incorporating these solutions, you can make the transition a stress-free experience, ensuring your pet stays happy and healthy throughout the food change.
