Did you just bring home a snake? Whether it’s a corn snake, a ball python, or another type of pet snake, these slithering sidekicks make curious and interactive companions.

Let's brush up on the basics of snake care. We want to help you get to know your new sidekick, from what snakes eat to the right temperature for their habitat, there are a few key things every snake owner should know.

Here’s our beginner-friendly snake care guide to help your new friend thrive.

Feeding Your Snake

Feeding is one of the most important parts of snake care. Most pet snakes, including corn snakes and ball pythons, are carnivores that eat rodents. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Type of food: Frozen mice or rats are the safest option. Live rodents can sometimes cause stress or accidental injuries.
  • Preparing food: Thaw frozen rodents in hot water until they reach body temperature (98–99°F). Avoid using a microwave.
  • Size of prey: Choose rodents no larger than the girth of your snake to make meals easy to swallow.
  • Feeding schedule: Young snakes may eat once or twice a week, while adults typically eat every 1–2 weeks depending on their size and species.
  • Water: Always provide a bowl of clean, dechlorinated water. Many snakes enjoy soaking in their water, which can also support healthy shedding

Setting Up Your Snake Habitat

A well-prepared habitat is key to keeping your snake happy and healthy:

  • Enclosure: Snakes are curious, so make sure it has a secure lid. Young snakes can start in smaller tanks (around 20 gallons), while adults usually need 40–50 gallons.
  • Substrate: Aspen bedding, reptile bark, recycled newspaper, or artificial turf all work well.
  • Hides: Provide at least two hides, one on the warm side and one on the cooler side. Pre-moistened moss in a hide helps maintain humidity and supports smooth shedding.
  • Water: A shallow water bowl big enough for your snake to soak in is ideal.

Temperature and Lighting

Snakes rely on their environment to regulate body temperature. Here’s how to set it up:

  • Basking spot: Keep a warm area at 85–90°F for most snakes.
  • Cool side: The cooler side of the habitat should stay around 75–80°F so your snake can move to regulate its body temperature.
  • Monitoring: Use thermometers on both sides of the tank to track temperatures.
  • Lighting: UVB lighting isn’t required for most pet snakes but can enhance their color and overall well-being.

Handling and Behavior

Snakes may not wag tails or purr, but they can still form a bond with you:

  • Handling: Give your snake 24–48 hours after eating before handling to prevent regurgitation.
  • Temperament: Corn snakes are curious and active, while ball pythons are known for their calm, gentle personalities.
  • Feeding quirks: Some snakes, like ball pythons, may skip meals occasionally. As long as your snake is healthy and maintaining weight, this is normal.

Fun and Enrichment

Snakes love exploring, climbing, and hiding. You can make their habitat engaging with:

  • Branches and climbing décor
  • Safe, snug hides
  • Occasional supervised exploration outside their tank

Snakes are intelligent and may even learn to recognize you and respond to gentle handling.
